TasteBoxd helps a household decide what to watch together. To do that it has to remember what you have rated and what you have told it about your taste. This page says what we keep, where it goes, and how to get it removed. It is written in plain English on purpose.
What we store
- Your email address, if you join the waitlist or sign up for an account.
- A display name and the colour you pick, so your household can tell your ratings apart.
- Ratings and reactions on films and series, including anything you import from Letterboxd or IMDb, and the results of "this or that" comparisons.
- Lists: your watchlist, your shared list, and what you have marked as seen.
- Free-text taste notes: answers to the taste interview, standing preferences, and the short briefs you type when asking for a pick (for example "something light, under two hours").
- Recommendation history: the shortlists we generated for you and how you responded to them.
- Basic technical data: for the waitlist form we keep a one-way hash of your IP address for a short time to stop abuse. We do not keep raw IP addresses or browsing history.
Who in your household can see it
TasteBoxd is built for two. Everyone in your household can see each other's ratings, lists, and taste notes; that is how the shared recommendations work. Do not write anything in a taste note that you would not want your household partner to read.
Where your data goes
- Anthropic. To generate recommendations and taste profiles, we send your ratings, lists, taste notes, and the brief you typed to Anthropic's Claude API. We send what is needed for that one request and nothing else (no email address, no password). Anthropic processes it under its commercial API terms.
- TMDB (The Movie Database). Film and series titles, posters, and genres come from the TMDB API. We send TMDB the titles you search for and the ids of titles we look up. We do not send TMDB your ratings, notes, or identity.
- Infrastructure. The app runs on Vercel and the database is hosted on Neon. They store data on our behalf and do not use it for anything else.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not use it to train AI models. If that ever changes, this page will change first and you will be told.
Cookies and browser storage
We set one cookie, zent_session, which is a signed token that says who you are signed in as. It is needed for the app to work and carries no tracking. We do not use analytics or advertising cookies. The app also keeps a few display preferences (which view you last used, for example) in your browser's local storage; those never leave your device.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account, so that your history keeps feeding recommendations. Waitlist emails are kept until you are invited in or ask to be removed. Taste notes you retire or replace are kept as history ("earlier views") so that the recommendations can tell what changed, until you delete your account.
Deleting your data
Ask and it is gone. Email the operator below from the address on your account and we will delete your account, ratings, lists, notes, and recommendation history, or remove you from the waitlist, within 30 days and confirm when it is done. Data already sent to Anthropic for a past request is subject to Anthropic's own retention policy for API requests.
Children
TasteBoxd is not meant for anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and tell signed-in users in the app before the change takes effect.
